The Berlin Wall in Twinity
The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer) was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) starting August 13, 1961, that completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. The barrier included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, which circumscribed a wide area (later known as the "death strip") that contained anti-vehicle trenches and other defenses. The Soviet-dominated Eastern Bloc officially claimed that the wall was erected to protect its population from fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" in building a Socialist State in East Germany. However, in practice, the Wall served to prevent the massive emigration and defection that marked Germany and the communist Eastern Bloc during the post-World War II period. The wall was a powerful symbol of the division of Europe during the Cold War until it fell on November 9, 1989.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 2009, Twinity reconstructed a true-to-scale section of the wall in virtual Berlin.

The Friedrichstraße border crossing point was the site where American and Soviet tanks engaged in a chilling stand-off on 27 October 1961.
(2) Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie was the name given by the Western Allies to the best-known Berlin Wall crossing point between East Germany and West Germany during the Cold War.
(3) Border crossings
The documentation centre on the site of the former Gestapo, SS, and Third Reich Security Police Headquarters documents Nazi atrocities and displays parts of the wall that have been preserved as an historic monument.
(4) Rebirth of city center
See the incredible transformation of this former wasteland into Berlin's shopping and cultural center in the very short space of time since reunification - an amazing sight!
(5) The death strip
Visit this formerly inaccessible area of no man's land between the Berlin Wall itself and the hinterland wall, and find out more about the infamous death strip.
(6) The Berlin Wall
Before 1989, the Brandenburg Gate was located just inside the border of the Soviet sector. Pariser Platz was part of the border strip and strictly guarded. Find out more about the building and the fall of the wall at this historic site.

The memorial at the Reichstag is dedicated to those who died trying to escape to West Berlin from the GDR after the border was sealed in 1961.
